Lecture – Musical Rhetoric with Murray and Callum Mclachlan
August 21 2025 @ 17:15 – 18:00
In todays lecture Murray discusses Musical Rhetoric with illustrations at the piano from Callum. The lecture will draw examples especially from Haydn’s A flat Sonata, and conclude with a performance of the first movement from Callum
In simple terms rhetoric means persuasion. Using examples throughout the talk Murray will show how to develop powers of musical persuasion from in-depth understanding of the musical score. Music needs to ‘speak’ to the listener. By combining musical intellect with feeling the performer can be empowered with intent to truly communicate rather than merely to impress in performance.
Beginning with musical analysis we can extend study towards a dialogue as phrase follows phrase. The aim is to make performance an act of conversation. Kinetic endeavour and authority results!
